Optimal specimen handling is a critical component of the success of an endoscopic procedure. For specimens obtained by endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) or endoscopic mucosal resections (EMRs), it is vital to maintain the orientation of the deep and lateral margins so that the completeness of resection can be assessed histologically.   

For handling of liver biopsy cores, it is important to first be able to make an immediate and accurate assessment of specimen adequacy, and then process the specimen without excessive handling, which could lead to fragmentation of the core.
